Freedom Treks Leads the Holiday Electric Bike Revolution Across Europe

Believing that everyone should have access to the health benefits of bike travel, Freedom Treks, the cycling holiday specialist, has introduced four new e-bike tours to its 2016 programme. Across its existing tours, there has been a huge increase in electric bikes, which are now available to hire and improvements in technology has made for lighter and more efficient e-bikes

This means that nearly two thirds (91) of its 150 European tours now allow holidaymakers of all fitness levels the chance to upgrade from a regular bicycle to an e-bike and broaden the range of terrain and distances open to them to enjoy.

Saul Follett, Freedom Treks Manager, said: “Cycling has been enjoying a social revolution in the UK since the 2012 Olympics, becoming the third most popular sport after swimming and running. And yet a large number of Brits who would relish the freedom of a cycling holiday are missing out on the fun, fearful that their fitness levels might be a barrier to keeping up with their cycle companions whilst away.

“A recent study by EURAC confirmed sales of e-bikes had increased by 19%, and we’ve certainly seen an increase in demand for e-bikes hire on our tours. Offering trips and bikes for all capabilities, from lapsed cyclists to keen enthusiasts, allows us to make cycling more inclusive and, hopefully, help more people rekindle their pedal passion.”

Since introducing its range of e-bike adventures, Freedom Treks has seen a particular increase in the number of multi-generational families sharing an active holiday. Whilst some family members might previously have stayed away, worried that they would be left behind, the e-bike option has levelled the pedalling playing field.

However, despite their advantages, electric bikes remain somewhat of an enigma for many.  Considered by some traditional cyclists as ‘cheating’, it seems many don’t appreciate that the bicycles have regular pedals that are simply backed up by a battery and motor. This means that e-bikers still enjoy the health and environmental benefits of cycling but have the option to engage a little assistance when they feel the need to.

Being able to maintain a faster average speed enables e-cyclists to explore further, conquer hills that might otherwise stood in the way of their next adventure and not be disheartened in the face of headwinds.  And, because the bikes are extremely quiet, they won’t disturb the tranquillity of the great outdoors.  Then it’s simply a case of charging it overnight at the next hotel (or back on-board if staying on a boat) and it’s ready to go again the next day.

Whilst another benefit of e-bikes is that they make it easier to carry heavy loads, Freedom Treks customers have the advantage of travelling light, safe in the knowledge that their luggage will be waiting for them at their next destination.

Saul concluded: “For the Freedom Treks team, the e in e-bikes simply stands for extra enjoyment for everyone.”
