France’s first ever cable car for skiers is turning 90!

France’s inaugural ski cable car, the Rochebrune cable car, is celebrating its 90th anniversary. In 1933, thanks to the financial support of Charles Viard, a Sallanches-based businessman, this pioneering cable car was erected in Megève, at the base of the Rochebrune mountain. A testament to modernism and innovation, it marked a revolutionary milestone in skiing history by transporting 96 skiers every hour on a swift ten-minute journey to an elevation of 1,750 meters. This marvel sparked the advent of skiing as we know it today, with countless skiers descending the slopes from dawn till dusk, leading to the natural grooming of terrain and the establishment of designated “ski runs.” In January 2024, the ski lift company will commemorate the 90th anniversary of this iconic “red cabin,” an avant-garde symbol of French skiing and an enduring monument to winter sports.
