Kitzbühel’s Legendary Legacy Meets the Sound Escape Festival

Kitzbühel, a town synonymous with iconic alpine sports and a vibrant cultural scene, is gearing up for another historic winter season. From celebrating British skiing triumphs to hosting the return of the Sound Escape – Boutique Festival, the year ahead promises to offer unforgettable experiences.

In the Footsteps of British Legends

For decades, Kitzbühel has been a magnet for world-class athletes, royalty, and high society, drawing visitors from across the globe. The roaring 1920s and 1930s saw the likes of Edward VIII grace the slopes, while the town became a playground for European aristocracy. Amidst this glamour, Kitzbühel also played host to some of the most significant moments in British skiing history.

In the early 20th century, British athletes began carving their mark on the prestigious Hahnenkamm races. Gordon Cleaver made history in 1931 by securing the first-ever Combined title in the inaugural race, laying the foundation for future British success. Evelyn Pinching followed suit in 1937 with a victorious run in the Downhill, marking the first race on the famed Streif course.

Fast forward to 2022, when Dave Ryding, affectionately known as The Rocket, made history as the first Briton to claim a World Cup gold trophy. His historic victory in the Kitzbühel slalom was celebrated worldwide, even making headlines in far-flung places like Fiji.

Ryding’s success continues to inspire British skiers. In 2024, he claimed an impressive 5th place finish in the Kitzbühel races, while fellow Brits Billy Major and Laurie Taylor also achieved personal bests. Though the podium remained out of reach, these performances demonstrated the extent to which British skiing continues to impress on the world stage.

As the Hahnenkamm races approach, which will take place from January 21st to 26th, 2025, Kitzbühel remains the epicentre of competitive skiing, with the British team poised to continue writing their legacy. Fans eager to spot skiing legends can visit the Londoner, a popular British pub in the heart of Kitzbühel that serves as a hub for athletes and fans alike.

Sound Escape – Boutique Festival Returns

Kitzbühel’s dynamic spirit extends beyond skiing. After a spectacular debut in Easter 2024, the Sound Escape – Boutique Festival returns for its second edition from March 28-30, 2025. With a perfect blend of music, culture, and alpine charm, this festival promises to be even bigger and better than before. Last year the festival featured over 40 renowned electronic music DJs across 14 unique locations in the mountains and valley, this year it is expected that the festival will continue to bring together global talent and an international crowd for a one-of-a-kind experience.

The Sound Escape festival takes place with free entry, and attendees will be able to enjoy not only the festival’s lively atmosphere but also the thrills of skiing on Kitzbühel’s slopes. With skiing during the day and music in the evening, visitors can enjoy the best of both worlds—adrenaline on the mountain and the rhythm of electronic beats in the heart of the town.

This year’s main act, the legendary Sven Väth, promises to deliver an unforgettable performance. Skiers can hit the slopes during the day and head straight to the festival’s events later in the afternoon or evening, making it a perfect combination of sport and music.

Looking Ahead

The 85th edition of the Hahnenkamm Races in January will once again spotlight Kitzbühel as the epicentre of skiing excellence. At the same time, the Sound Escape festival in March will continue to redefine the town’s role as a cultural destination.
