Getting hitched with Heaven
With Heaven’s top dog Lynsey Devon on her way down the aisle, what better way to celebrate than by picking our top five places to get hitched and honeymoon around the world. From north to south, east to west, we’ve found weddings all over the world that will inspire you to say “I do”.
Och-aye do
Heaven’s top of the wedding pops is Aviemore in Scotland. As we speak, Lynsey is off up to the Highlands and has already briefed the bagpipers on the song list (featuring Abba on the pipes). Less than an hour away from Inverness, Aviemore marries traditional Scottish charm with adventure and is – quite simply – stunning. The weather can be a bit hit and miss but that’s all part of the fun, especially with the cover of traditional lodges and cosy log cabins a-plenty. Ideal for your special day, expert chefs will provide you with sample menus jam-packed with exquisite local produce (with or without the jam of course). Think Scottish smoked salmon, Aberdeen steak, highland haggis and plenty of other delicious Scottish delights (no deep-fried Mars bars in sight!). Okay, we don’t know how delicious haggis is but I can assure you that the vast selection of food is top notch, and not all of it cooked and served in a sheep’s innards. www.visitaviemore.com / www.cairngorm.com/weddings
The Luxe One
Verbier’s got it all when it comes to luxury, and for laid back divas who simply can’t lift a finger, the W hotel in the heart of Verbier will organise your wedding from start to finish. They’ll set up your proposal, organise the big day and look after that weird uncle that you couldn’t avoid inviting, all whilst you spend the day on the more important things, like working your way through the extensive list of treatments at the Away Spa. www.verbier.ch / www.wverbier.com
The Ultimate Elope
If third-cousins twice removed and awkward encounters with your ex don’t sound appealing, take a trip to the bottom of the world with Quark Expeditions and celebrate your marriage in Antarctica, where your witnesses will be the penguins and you can have seals for bridesmaids – neither will upstage the bride and couples can sail away in true wedded bliss. www.quarkexpeditions.com
Not your average ‘Gap-Yah’
Shun the standard beach getaway, throw caution to the wind and head off on the ultimate adventure on your honeymoon with Rickshaw Travels. Strap on a backpack and make your way to Sri Lanka for trekking and trains, mingling with the friendly locals, and the epic sunrise at Adam’s Peak. This isn’t your average ‘gap-yah’ holiday, these guys are the pros when it comes to getting off the beaten track and into the unknown. www.rickshawtravel.co.uk
Chef, Host, Minister?
So confident are Al and Kat (the founders of AliKats Mountain Holidays) that Lac Montriond is a Narnia-esque dream location for a wedding, Al has been known to help out with a wedding or two. Who needs a wedding in a church when you can do it at 2000m? After you say I do, kiss the bride (we recommend removing your goggles first), clip those skis back on and head back to the chalet for a glass of bubbles in the hot tub. Sadly Al isn’t available for hire, but the chalets most certainly are. www.alikats.eu
Showing off in Jackson Hole
Whether you’re a true park rat or a bonafide ski bunny, there’s no denying that Jackson Hole is a stunning location to tie the knot. Imposing snowy peaks and gorgeous panoramic views make for a seriously impressive set of wedding pics. So swap your helmet for a cowboy hat, nip across the Atlantic and get hitched in a winter wonderland (screaming Yee-Ha instead of I do isn’t necessary but most certainly recommended). www.jacksonhole.com
A huge congratulations to the gorgeous bride Lynsey and her handsome groom James. We wish you all the happiness in the world and hope you have the most beautiful wedding!
